WHAT AREA ARE YOU GOING TO VISIT?

01. SAN JOSÉ

San José is the capital of Costa Rica and is located in the Central Valley. Over the years, it has developed into a modern and cosmopolitan city. It's interesting to note that San Jose is home to

approximately one-third of Costa Rica's entire population. Additionally, the city is served by the Juan Santamaria International Airport, which is the country's main international gateway.

02. SARAPIQUÍ

San Gerardo de Dota cloud forest is a breathtakingly beautiful region located in the Central Highlands of Costa Rica. This pristine natural wonderland is known for its lush vegetation, mist covered mountains, and vibrant biodiversity. One of the most magnificent bird species that can be found in this region is the resplendent Quetzal. Known for its vibrant plumage and long, elegant tail feathers, the Quetzal is truly a sight tobehold. San Gerardo de Dota offers an excellent opportunity to spot the Quetzal in its natural habitat, making it a must-visit location for bird lovers.

03. DOTA

Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí is a small town located in the Sarapiquí Canton in the province of Heredia in Costa Rica. It is a popular tourist destination due to its natural beauty and rich biodiversity. The town is surrounded by lush rainforests and several nature reserves, such as Braulio Carrillo National Park and La Selva Biological Station. These reserves offer hiking trails, and birdwatching opportunities

  • DAY 1: Arrival Day to Costa Rica

    Upon arrival at Juan Santamaría Airport, guests can catch the specific Hotel shuttle, which runs every 15 minutes to get ready and relax before the adventure begins.

    DAY 2 -3-4 -5 Caribbean Side
    On Day 2, we’ll head out bright and early for the Caribbean lowlands so we can make the most of the day after a 2-hour drive. As soon as we arrive, we’ll jump straight into our photo adventures with macro sessions focused on amazing species like red-eyed tree frogs, poison dart frogs, and local snakes. Over the next few days, we'll also have dedicated sessions for iconic birds like toucans and the majestic King Vulture, plus a super unique night session photographing bats. Throughout our stay, our days will be packed with searching for incredible wildlife while getting to hang out and work alongside the local families who will host and guide us every step of the way.

    DAYS 6 & 7: CLOUD FOREST OF SAN GERARDO DE DOTA The Resplendent Quetzal & High-Altitude Birds

    For the next leg of our photo expedition, we’ll head out after breakfast on Day 5 to get checked in and settled at our next hotel in the cloud forest of San Gerardo de Dota (about a 4.5-hour drive).

    We’ll spend these two days tracking down the iconic Resplendent Quetzal, visiting private reserves owned by local families who protect the forest and actively monitor these incredible birds. Along the way, we'll also have plenty of opportunities to photograph regional endemics, including high-altitude hummingbirds and vibrant tanagers.

    Important Note: This region is completely different from the lowlands! We’ll be at over 6,500 feet (2,000 meters) above sea level, where it gets quite cold, so be sure to pack warm layers!

    DAY 8 Transfer back to San Jose, Airport Hotel

    DAY 9: FLY HOME
    On departure day, the shuttle service from Fairfield Marriott Alajuela to Juan Santamaría International Airport runs every 15 minutes, starting from 4:30 am until midnight, ensuring convenient transportation for your journey home.
